RED Epic

The Epic is the first real RED Camera, not a beta.  As such, it is the best of the RED One MX but lighter and faster.  A big boon for 3D beam splitter rigs.

Sensor

The S35mm sensor is rated at 800 EI and will capture up to 120fps at 4K and 5K.  It will do 180fps at 3K and 225fps at 2K.  The resolution diminishes, but 3K is usually ok with a 1080 HD finish. It has 12 stops of latitude and 5120x2700 bayer pattern pixels.

Media

In camera recording to 16GB CF Cards or up to 256GB SSDs all in RED Raw.  Compression is from high - RC25, to virtually none at RC250.  The size of file is also very large, but RC100 will likely be the high end of even most feature films.

Post

The RED Raw files are transcoded to Quicktime or MXF for offline.  This process is lengthy, even at reduced quality, unless using a RED Rocket card, which always uses the highest quality debayering and still is up to 10 times faster than without the Rocket.

For best results, return to RED Raw for final color correction.  Many post houses will convert to DPX, only the final cut, and correct from that.  Some can work real time on the RED Raw itself.

Notes

Another method to avoid matching mack to RED Raw is to do the original transcode to Quicktime ProRes 444 12 bit using REDLogFilm setting.  This keeps the latitude for color correction, but without having to debayer a second time.
